Is normal really normal? That is the question. We were all raised a certain way, with certain values, ethics, and morals but in the end is it right? Depending on where you live these traits can change drastically, but for the most part, are universal throughout place to place. There are certain norms every accepts to be true and for the most part are based off of deductive reasoning. However, there are those who are lets say ‘different’ who go against the norms of everyday society.
Since I’m a Philosophy major (and hate it for the most part), I find myself thinking a little more outside the box for some reason. Two years ago this would have never happened, but then isn’t now. After taking Philosophy course after course, there are some topics which are really interesting such as Philosophy of the Mind and Space and Time. Other courses, well, lets just say their topics aren’t that interesting and would rather be in prison than siting through the lecture. Well let’s just get to the point and discuss what is normal…
What is normal? It may be dressing a certain way, driving on the right side of the road, saying polite gestures and excusing yourself when needed. Institutions in today’s society have made it almost impossible to do the exact opposite of what is accepted (because everyone is doing it). But, what if…What if everything we were doing was wrong. What if we weren’t suppose to sleep everyday for 6-8 hours for a period of time, and just sleep in intervals of 20-30 minutes every 4-5 hours (polyphasic sleeping). What if Christianity wasn’t the “right” religion and atheism was. What if we were suppose to live in a world where everyone lives in equality and there were no jobs or money. Think of a world where everything is the opposite of what you think is normal.
Everyone today is afraid to live ‘outside the box’ and be ‘different’. That is because we either wouldn’t be accepted or liked. Everyone today needs to stop worrying about everyone else and start worrying about themselves more. I fall victim with coming to conclusions about people depending on what they do, wear, or act. You need to do what makes you satisfied, happy, and in the end, what makes you, you. This world shouldn’t be made up of categories of wrongness or rightness, and people shouldn’t be left in the corner because someone doesn’t believe what they are doing is ‘right’.
We all live in a world where Religion has inscribed a set of laws whether it be Christianity, Islam, Hinuism, Judaism, or even Atheism. Most wars throughout history have been fought because of religious beliefs or of some other sort relating back to religion. In the end, do we even know whos religion is right? We are all reading a book where there is this “Ultimate Being” who did marvelous things, but there is NO evidence to prove any omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent being ever existed. Sure, there may be artifacts but how can we know what is true and what isn’t? What if…the world was created and everyone was supposed to be atheist? What if there is no promise land where everyone goes when they die?
For all we know, death could feel like sleep to us. We never know when we died, and it would be like we were in a coma. Or we could have posited a different life form in this world, or even other worlds. For all we know there are hundreds of other worlds out there just like ours and we were ‘test subject 14986′ which had a certain flaw, lets say, lying. So we were left in this big universe to die off, however long that would take. Imagine that ‘test subject (world) 19854475′ was the world “God” made and turned out to be perfect. Now this world crawling on your hands and knees is what everyone does instead of walking on their feet, and lawns in your front yard were always dead because that is what was ‘right’. Think of the most outrageous stuff happening and this is the “perfect world” “God” wanted to create. However, uniqueness was the right answer. People dressed with hair as clothes, drive ostriches around, shake feet instead of hands, etc. Think of there being no murder and rape, and that everyone lived their life freely without corporate influence based off profit and losses.
We don’t even know if we are really living or real. How can we say or even prove that we existed 2 days ago. For all we know God could have created us 1 minute ago and put all these memories, thoughts, and records in our mind and in actuality, have been only living for 1 minute. Weird I know, but it could be possible. What I’m trying to say is nothing is normal. Even the most bizarre stuff in this world could have been what was suppose to be ‘right’ (e.g., eating people, prostitution, etc.); all the horrible stuff you thought was wrong. So what I’m trying to say is, be yourself, and don’t let anyone dictate who you are or want to be.
